I once attended a Rabbi’s lecture on the Exodus, where he explained that the Hebrew word for “bones” , as in Joseph’s bones, also denotes “essence”. Thus, Israel was not only to take Joseph’s bone with them to the promised land, but to also take the “essence” of Joseph too, i.e., his virtues or qualities as well as his righteous legacy etc.
